Payment Handheld FAQ

Explore common questions about payment acceptance methods, EMV and PCI security, front-facing NFC design, enterprise connectivity, and fleet management for modern Android payment handheld devices.

1. When should a business choose a dedicated payment handheld instead of SoftPOS or Tap-to-Phone?

SoftPOS is attractive when a business mainly needs contactless acceptance on existing smartphones or tablets. A purpose-built payment handheld is more suitable when operations require chip insertion, magnetic stripe, contactless payment, dedicated payment hardware, ruggedness, removable batteries, and controlled enterprise deployment in one device. PCI MPoC provides the security framework for COTS-based mobile payment solutions, while dedicated terminals follow a different hardware-oriented deployment model. RT070 is designed for the latter scenario, combining Insert, Swipe and Contactless payment in one Android handheld.

2. Why do modern payment terminals still support insert, swipe and contactless payment instead of contactless only?

Payment infrastructure is not uniform across countries, banks, card portfolios and merchant environments. Supporting EMV chip, magnetic stripe and contactless interfaces gives merchants greater transaction coverage and provides alternative acceptance methods when one interface is unavailable or inappropriate. For businesses operating across different customer groups or markets, a multi-interface terminal can therefore reduce payment friction. RT070 integrates all three methods—Insert, Swipe and Contactless—within one handheld platform.

3. Does EMV certification mean a payment terminal can immediately be deployed with any bank or payment processor?

Not necessarily. EMV approval covers different technical layers: Level 1 addresses the physical communication interface, Level 2 covers the EMV kernel, and Level 3 validates integration with merchant, processor and payment-system infrastructure. Therefore, hardware support for EMV does not automatically mean every acquirer or payment network deployment is complete. RT070 provides EMV Contact and Contactless capabilities, but final deployment should still be validated against the target processor, acquirer and market requirements.

4. How should enterprises evaluate the security lifecycle of a payment terminal, not just its certification at launch?

Payment-terminal security should be evaluated over the entire deployment lifecycle, including PCI approval version, approval expiry, firmware maintenance, operating-system updates and the ability to migrate to newer security requirements. PCI PTS approvals have defined lifecycle and expiration rules, so buyers planning multi-year deployments should consider upgradeability as well as current compliance. The RT070 datasheet lists PCI PTS 6.x with an upgrade path to 7.x, making lifecycle planning an important part of its deployment strategy.

5. Why does NFC antenna location and contactless read range matter in real-world payment terminals?

Contactless payment is not only about having NFC; the position and effective read range of the antenna directly affect how easily customers know where to tap and how reliably transactions start. EMVCo specifically evaluates contactless read-range behavior because poor positioning can create repeated taps and checkout friction. RT070 places the NFC reading area on the front of the device so the payment interaction is visible and intuitive to the customer.

6. How important is network redundancy for mobile payment terminals used away from a fixed checkout counter?

For tableside payment, pop-up retail, field service and mobile checkout, payment availability increasingly depends on the terminal's ability to stay connected as workers move between environments. Supporting both enterprise Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity reduces dependence on a single network path, although actual offline authorization depends on the payment application and acquirer rather than the hardware alone. RT070 supports Wi-Fi 6E with 802.11r Fast Roaming, 2G/3G/4G LTE, Nano SIM and eSIM for flexible deployment.

7. What factors have the biggest impact on the total cost of ownership of a payment-terminal fleet?

Purchase price is only one part of TCO. Enterprises should also evaluate battery replacement, charging infrastructure, device downtime, drop resistance, protective accessories and the efficiency of managing many devices across shifts. A replaceable battery can keep a terminal in service without waiting for the entire device to recharge, while multi-slot docks simplify fleet charging. RT070 combines a 5000mAh quick-removable battery, 18W charging, protective accessories and optional single-bay or 5-slot charging docks.

8. How is an enterprise Android payment handheld different from a traditional standalone card terminal?

A traditional payment terminal is primarily designed to process transactions, while an Android payment handheld can combine payment acceptance with business applications, connectivity and frontline workflows on the same device. This can reduce device switching and allow payment to become part of a broader service workflow, but enterprises must still manage application security, OS lifecycle and payment certification carefully. RT070 combines Android 16, a 6.75-inch display, mobile connectivity and an integrated payment module in one handheld platform.

9. Why do some payment terminals place the NFC antenna above the display, and does this require more advanced design?

Placing the NFC antenna on the front of the terminal above the display gives customers a clear and intuitive tap zone without requiring the merchant to turn the device around. This is especially useful for handheld and tableside payment, where the screen and payment area can remain facing the customer.

However, front-facing NFC can require more careful engineering than simply placing an antenna on the rear housing. Nearby components such as the display, PCB ground planes, batteries and metal structures can affect the NFC RF field, so antenna size, placement, matching, shielding and RF tuning must be optimized. STMicroelectronics notes that displays and large ground planes can degrade NFC antenna performance, while EMVCo requires the contactless landing zone to correspond to the strongest antenna read area.

This can increase engineering, RF tuning and certification effort, although it does not necessarily mean a dramatically higher component cost. In practice, the additional value comes from achieving reliable contactless performance while maintaining a slim industrial design and an intuitive customer experience.

RT070 adopts a front-facing NFC design above the display, allowing customers to tap a card or NFC-enabled device directly on the visible payment area.
